Since November 8, 2018, Smart-ID has been officially certified as a qualified signature creation device (QSCD). This means that from now on new Smart-ID accounts will allow to create qualified e-signatures rather than advanced ones as before.
Smart-ID levels
Until November, 2018, Smart-ID accounts were divided into two levels: Smart-ID Basic and Smart-ID. The first one used to allow users to identify themselves in Swedbank and SEB banks e-banking systems. Meanwhile, the second one could be used in various e-services and for signing e-documents with an advanced e-signature based on a qualified certificate.
From now on, one more level is added — Smart-ID Qualified Electronic Signature, which can be used in various e-services, as well as for signing documents with a qualified e-signature.
You can check which account you have in the app’s Application info.
What does this mean for me?
All the new accounts created by registering with Mobile-ID, eID card or at bank branches will now be qualified and will allow to create qualified e-signatures.
The users who’ve been using Smart-ID before but would like to upgrade their accounts, should create a new one:
- Make sure that your Smart-ID app version is not older than 14.7. To check the version of your application visit Application info in Menu. Update the app if the version is outdated.
- Delete your current account and register the new one. In Menu click Delete account and confirm your action.
- Register your new account using Mobile-ID or ID card. If you do not have any of these eIDs, you can visit Swedbank, SEB or Luminor bank branches to register your Smart-ID account.
If you don’t upgrade your account, you will still be able to use Smart-ID just as before, but it will not generate a qualified e-signature.

For e-service providers
With Smart-ID becoming a qualified e-signature creation device, businesses and e-service providers are provided with more opportunities, whether you have an e-service that requires logins for your clients or provide more complex services where users can sign documents electronically.
Smart-ID can now be equated with mobile signature or eID e-signature. The only difference is that Smart-ID popularity has been growing way faster than other e-signature tools – in a year the number of Smart-ID users in the Baltics exceeded 2.5M and they perform over 51M transactions per month. The solution for Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians is even more attractive because it is free of charge, which allows to forecast even more growing user base.
